Fire Safety

Protect your family and your home from fire. Here is a simple checklist to help you evaluate your home for fire safety.


____ Smoke detectors placed near bedrooms, away from air vents.
____ At least one smoke detector on every floor
____ Smoke detector batteries checked regularly
____ Home evacuation plan posted – two exits from each room and outdoor meeting place noted.
____ Emergency numbers posted near telephone
____ Well-lit kitchen and hallways
____ Doors, hallways, and stairs clear of obstructions
____ No flammable materials (such as curtains or towels) within three feet of space heaters or stove
____ No frayed or cracked electrical cords
____ No electrical cords under rugs, over nails or in high traffic areas
____ No overloaded electrical outlets or extension cords; no unusually warm outlets
____ No electrical cords near sink or range
____ All fuses in fuse box are correct size
____ All outlets have cover plates and no exposed wiring
____ No alternate heaters hooked up to extension cords
____ Heaters are unplugged after you turn them off
____ No alternate heaters placed where they can be knocked over
____ No grease on stove or in oven
____ No small pans on large burners or large pans on small burners
____ There is a rubber floor mat in front of the stove to prevent slipping
____ Dish towels are not used as potholders
____ No ashtrays on chair or sofa arms or near beds
____ Chimneys clean and free of debris
