Oak Harbor Wastewater outfall springs a leak

On Friday May 14th it was discovered that the cities RBC wastewater treatment plant outfall pipe had sprung a leak. The leak appears to be small but it raised concerns over public health. The Department of Health was contacted as well as the Department of Ecology. The plant was immediately shut down and flow bypassed to the the SPB Lagoon wastewater plant. The major concern was the tide pool that had formed around the leak approximately 290 feet off shore near Windjammer Park. Approaching this area would be dangerous as the stability of the surrounding area is not known at this time. Signage will be put up stating the conditions to help prevent the public from approaching the tide pool that develops at lower tides. The leak itself was of little danger to public health as it was treated and disinfected effluent meeting water quality standards required by our NPDES permit issued by the Department of Ecology.  The Wastewater Dept. and their camera crew will try to view the breach by running video equipment down the line in an attempt to ascertain the cause and severity so repairs can be made as soon as possible.
