Citizen Volunteers

NEW MEMBERS WELCOME!

In September of 1993, Citizens On Patrol was formed, to assist the Patrol Division as “extra eyes and ears”, in watching for suspicious and criminal activity throughout the City of Oak Harbor.  They began their first actual patrols in March of 1994.  These volunteers are given 12 hours of specialized training in what to look for and how to report it.

In early 2013, the program was re-named Citizen Volunteers, to more accurately reflect the various volunteer opportunities available at the Police Department, in addition to "Patrolling".

On Patrol, Citizen Volunteers are provided with a vehicle and radios and cell phones, to blanket the City with “Extra Patrol”.  When suspicious or criminal activity is observed, the volunteers will report it via cell phone to the I-COM Dispatch Center, who will in turn dispatch an officer to handle the incident.

The membership has continuous training on a monthly basis, and is kept informed on the activities of the City.  The Citizen Volunteers assist with community functions, to help the Police Department and the citizens of our City.  When on patrol, they assist the Patrol Division in watching for suspicious activity, persons and vehicles in the neighborhoods of our community.  They volunteer in various areas of the Department.  Patrol shifts cover weekdays, and Friday and Saturday night patrols, or more frequently as special needs arise.

Walking patrols provide two more sets of eyes and remind the public that we care about their safety.

Volunteers are needed to provide a minimum of two patrols per month. A valid driver's license, good driving record, written authorization from a physician and a security check are the requirements for those persons over the age of 18. Couples are able to patrol together in the car provided by the city of Oak Harbor, as they check on the homes of those  who are out of town.
