Application Process

It is important that your online application show all the relevant education and experience you possess.  Please pay careful attention to the various attachments that are required, as they vary with each recruitment. You must include your employment history, for at least the previous 5 years, in the online application in order to be considered for employment.  Your resume and cover letter may not be used as a substitute for a complete application.  Applications may be rejected if they are incomplete.  Resumes and cover letters are supplemental to the online application.  They provide additional details regarding an applicant, but are not relied upon to determine minimum qualifications in the process. Incomplete or inaccurate information may be reason for disqualification from further consideration.

Application for Employment

Q.  Do I need to fill out the online application or can I just send my resume for an open position?

Status, Interviews and Testing

Q.  What happens after a job closes?

A.  Once a job posting has closed, the job announcement will be removed from the website but you will be able to log-in to view your status through your applicant portal.  We will contact applicants as we proceed through the process.  If you have not received a phone call, e-mail or letter, then the process is still in the review stage.  Due to the large volume of applications the City receives, the review process may take longer than usual.  Every effort is made to notify applicants selected for an interview as early as possible.

Human Resources, department designee and/or panel will review all applications for the position after the closing date.  Each application is considered.

Q.  I haven't heard anything about the job status since the job closed, what is the status?

A.  You can check the screening status in your applicant portal. Those selected to interview will be notified of the date, time and location of the interview and if any testing will take place.  Those not selected to interview can see their status in their applicant portal and/or may be notified by email. We suggest you check your spam email as sometimes our emails go to spam.

Background Checks

Q.  Do you conduct reference and background checks?

A.  Yes.  Reference and background checks are part of the process and are usually conducted prior to hire.  A contingent offer of employment may be made that is subject to a satisfactory background check before beginning work for the City of Oak Harbor.
