Temporary Sign Code

The City of Oak Harbor has had a significant number of questions and complaints regarding signs in the right of way.  Since this is the first election cycle under the 2017 sign code, it may be helpful to remind everyone how the City code functions and what is allowed or not allowed.  The City code no longer regulates by sign content, but rather by sign “type”.  The signs that citizens are commenting on fall under the temporary sign provisions of the code.  Temporary signs are permitted within the right of way, between the sidewalk and the road, but there are limitations.  The number of signs in front of any given parcel cannot exceed the number permitted in the code* and the adjacent property owner must give permission prior to sign placement.  The City will remove signs that create a hazard, and will address code violations through the City code enforcement process, which is based on receipt of a complaint form from citizens (click here to view the form).

For more information see Oak Harbor Municipal Code Section 19.36.80 Temporary and Special Signs:

*For Type D “yard signs”, the number allowed is: commercial / industrial: 1 per business; multifamily residential: 1 per 60 feet of frontage; single-family residential: maximum of 8 sq ft total; public rights-of-way: 1 per frontage.
