Memorial Day

Half-Staff Reminder

Memorial Day, originally called Decoration

Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. There are many stories as to its actual beginnings, with over two dozen cities and towns laying claim to being the birthplace of Memorial Day, however Waterloo NY was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966.  In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by an act of Congress, though it is still often called Decoration Day. It was then also placed on the last Monday in May.

The US flag is to be flown at half-staff from dawn until Noon on this Memorial Day, May 29th, 2017 on all buildings, grounds, by all people of the United States, and naval vessels throughout the United States, and in all areas under its jurisdiction and control.
